Sep. 29th, 2006 12:30 pmNovember 13th is the municpal Election for the city of Ottawa. I know that most people don't care about such, but i personally strive to ensure my voice is heard in matters democratic. It's part of my philosophy that you can't bitch if you don't vote, and i am fond of complaining about my elected representatives. Voting won't take much effort and it can make a difference.
Now for the partisan portion of the show. Out of the three candidates for Mayor, (Charelli, Munter and O'Brian) i have long ago determined who has my vote. Munter managed to set up his own buisness (The Kanata Courier newspaper) before getting the position of regional counsellor. He managed to balance the books, aid social causes and actually show care for his constituants. He was a young guy whom was elected without competetion in the second election for that post, as all of the other candidates abdicated in his support. He managed fiscal responsability and progressive social/environmental work once again in his second term. He helped a socially progressive agenda in a riding harshly conservative in nature. He was representing part of the 2 federal ridings whom were owned by the Alliance a couple elections ago; the _only_ Alliance ridings in all of Ontario.
Have i mentioned that he was out of the closet during his first term as regional counsellor, if not earlier? Even when he was commonly known as a queer politician in the most socially conservative riding in Ontario, he was still lauded by the people of the riding.
There are only 2 politicians whom i trust not to stab me in the back for a dime on the street. He is one of them, with the other being my paternal grandfather whom didn't manage to win a seat a few federal elections ago. I am rarely this impressed with politicians, but he seems like one of the few out there to make a positive difference instead of accruing power.
Either way, as a citizen i strongly urge you to vote for anyone. Personally, i hope that you consider my opinions while you make your own well-researched opinions.
